Abstract

The effects and safety of using oral nifedipine 10-20 mg as an acute antihypertensive regimen were studied in 25 consecutive patients with very high blood pressure requiring emergent reduction.
Oral nifedipine significantly reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressures in 22 patients (88%). Significant reduction of blood pressure was observed as early as 23 minutes after administration (from 226¡¾31/133¡¾27 mmHg to 162¡¾19/97¡¾16 mmHg, p<0.001). The maximal reduction of blood pressure was observed at 57 minutes after administration (from 226¡¾31/ 133¡¾27 mmHg to 147¡¾25 mmHg, p<0.001). The mean action duration of nifedipine was 172¡¾55 minutes. Significant side effects of nifedipine were reflex tachycardia(16%), and dizziness (8%).
Nifedipine is a simple, effective and safe alternative agent for managing hypertensive emergencies.
